Dolby announces Vijay's Thalaivaa in Atmos - Event Story

Dolby announces Vijay's Thalaivaa in Atmos
Dolby Laboratories and SPI Cinemas invited the press earlier today, 12thJune 2013, to announce some developments that are set to redefine the way movies are presented to the audience. The major focus of the event was to communicate the teaming up of SPI Cinemas with Dolby to enable 37 screens across their theatres with the latest groundbreaking technology that is the Dolby Atmos.

According to Pankaj Kedia, Country Manager of Dolby Laboratories India, Dolby Atmos will be a game changer and a far cry from the earlier surround sound technology. It will be able to achieve a dynamic, dramatic, natural and realistic output while giving a fully immersive viewing experience to the audience. The latest technology offers content creators total freedom to position their sonic ideas effectively with a full hemisphere to play around with.

The CEO of SPI Cinemas Kiran Reddy’s efforts to offer nothing short of the absolute best to his guests has resulted in Chennai earning the recognition of the single city with the most Dolby Atmos enabled screens in the world, making it a movie-goers paradise. Mr. Reddy said that Dolby Atmos offered the sound that they were looking for all this while. He was categorical in saying that the earlier incremental developments in surround sound technology could offer only a minimal shelf-life but the Dolby Atmos is the definite next generation.

Dolby Atmos is not restricted to any specific genres as a wide range of titles such as Life of Pi, The Hobbit, Man of Steel and The Wolverine have embraced and employed the technology. In India Superstar Rajinikanth’s Sivaji 3D was the first Indian film to use Dolby Atmos but the other big announcement at the event revealed that Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s Thalaivaa will be coming out in the same format. Producer C.V. Kumar, whose new Pizza franchise which will be delivering Pizza 2 - The Villa in Dolby Atmos as well, said that the cost of mixing the sound in this new format is hardly 20% more than the regular affair. The sound designers of The Villa were visibly thrilled to be working with Dolby Atmos at such an early stage in their careers and that the technology opens up several possibilities for sound and music reproduction.

For SPI Cinemas, Dolby plans to have the technology migration complete across the 37 screens by the end of this year and is targeting at least 1000 screens worldwide to subscribe to this new technological leap

'Vijay has graduated from Thalapathy to Thalaivan' - Event Story

'Vijay has graduated from Thalapathy to Thalaivan'
Thalaivaa’s audio launch was treated in a high profile manner with entries being individually screened and only those invited were allowed, still there was a raucous group of Vijay fans who were a part of the evening, cheering every highlight.

The evening at the Taj Coramandel began on an auspicious note before the film’s producer Chandraprakash Jain delivered the opening address. He recalled Sri Mishri Productions’ earlier film, Rickshawmama, featuring Sathyaraj who was present at the event all suited up. Mr. Jain believed that the production house’s successful track record will continue with Thalaivaa. He had words of praise for Vijay for his personal conduct and sincerity.

Sathyaraj was his usual lively self and passed humorous remarks on the slick dress code for the evening issued by Director Vijay. But importantly the veteran actor pointed out that Vijay had now graduated from being ‘Thalapathy’ to becoming ‘Thalaivan’ and continued by saying that all of Vijay’s fans have now become ‘Thalapathys’ under the leadership of Vijay.

The star of the evening G.V.Prakash spoke of his excitement of composing for Vijay and as a bonus getting the chance to shake a leg with him for a song. G.V’s team performed unplugged versions of two songs while a dance group lit up the stage with their moves for ‘Tamil Pasanga’.

Some of the film’s key supporting characters such as the film’s villain Abhimanyu Singh and the second heroine Ragini were thrilled to see the reception by the audience for this film and said that the film had something special in it for everyone. Amala Paul looked like a glamorous fashionista in her beautiful outfit and thanked Director Vijay for casting her and joked that he would continue to do the same in the future. She said she never imagined that she would be dancing with Vijay, and that the superstar was a very warm person and made her feel very comfortable despite her nerves.

Santhanam, though not present at the event, spoke through a video recording and said that his fans will be satisfied with the comedy and the film itself will surely fulfil the expectations of the fans. Ilayathalapathy Vijay made a dramatic entry on stage to the sound of ‘Thalapathy Thalapathy’ earlier in the evening. When invited to speak a few words he was his usual measured self and only said that he had watched the film and he had enjoyed it and felt that the audience too will feel the same way.

Director Vijay thanked all the distinguished guests and his back-end team for their hard-work and support. The music was launched with a large contingent of actors and diginitaries that included Nasser, Saranya Ponvannan, Manobala, Suresh, Ponvannan, RB Chowdry, SA Chandrasekhar, T Siva and other along with the team of Thalaivaa.

Talking to Thalaivaa - Event Story

On a balmy Wednesday morning a few members of Behindwoods had arrived at Ilayathalapathy Vijay’s office upon his personal invitation. The agenda of meeting the superstar was to personally greet him for his birthday and wish him the best for his future endeavors, but more importantly it was also to showcase the overwhelming support and goodwill shared by you, the visitors, on the occasion of his birthday.

Dressed very casually in a shirt and a pair of jeans, Vijay emerged out of his main office into the lobby where he greeted the team with a smile and accepted our gifts, 39 red roses and a bottle of the finest champagne. Vijay was at his most approachable and affable best as he treated each Behindwoods member present, to a personal photo with him.

After all the pictures were taken, the star sat down to hear out the Behindwoods members as they elaborated on the site’s specials for his birthday. Vijay also very patiently went through each and every greeting that the site had recorded during his birthday special. The sight of him taking the effort to go through nearly thousand messages, was a sign of a star who respected every single adulation and love he received from his fans.

Vijay finally wrapped up the meeting by saying a huge thanks to his legion of supporters and well wishers who have stood by him all these years. During the meeting’s close, Behindwoods members suggested that Vijay ought to pop open the champagne during the success of Thalaivaa and enjoy it with his close group.

In the end, as much as it was memorable for the Behindwoods staff, we assume it was equally special for Vijay for he could feel the warmth of the affection that had been pouring in over the last week.
Once again, thanks for your time Vijay!

A.R.Murugadoss is proud about hailing from Rahman's land - Event Story

The music of Nedunchalai, featuring Aari and Suvatha, and composed by Sathya, was released yesterday evening, the 1st of July, in a memorable event at the Kamala Cinemas, Chennai. A.R.Rahman and A.R.Murugadoss did the honors of releasing the audio.

Murugadoss was visibly impressed about the fact that director Krishna was working with an unheralded and new cast and crew. He also said that Engeyum Eppodhum's director Saravanan decided to give composer Sathya a chance only after listening to his work in Nedunchalai. This gives us an idea about the long time taken for the music to finally see the light of day.

Murugadoss also recollected his assistant director days in the 90s when he used to be a bachelor renting a room in Dr. Subbarayan Nagar, just for the fact that Rahman's recording studio was also housed in the same locality. The entire locality used to be pitch dark at night except Rahman's studio as the composer would be occupied with work all through the night.

Murugadoss also admitted that he feels proud about introducing himself abroad as one who came from Rahman's land. He advised Sathya to take Rahman as his inspiration and work with dedication and also hoped that director Krishna would strike it big with Nedunchalai.

Rahman, who has already worked with Krishna in Sillunu Oru Kaadhal (SOK), told that the director usually narrated his stories in an emotionally charged manner and also patted him for making a quality product despite the absence of big stars. The wizard wished to work on more quality films here and not just the many big banner films that he gets in Hindi.

Krishna said that entering Rahman's studio is akin to entering a temple as we would get what we wish for, thanks to Rahman's unflinching hard work. He cherishes the one and a half years that he spent with Rahman during the making of SOK. He also expressed his appreciation for Murugadoss' films and their commercial viability.

Nedunchalai's music has been released by Think Music

Gautham Menon, an admirer of Thiyagarajan’s work happily agreed to the proposal of directing the segment. Gautham loves his work that he agreed even before hearing the script.  And once he heard it, he was blown!”

This will not be for the first time that GVM has done something experimental as his film Nadunisi Naaygal was labelled as an experiment by the ace director himself.

Shruti Haasan signed a film she wouldn't watch

If someone asked her if she was the daughter of actor Kamal Haasan, Shruti used to say no and call herself Pooja Ramachandran. Not that she wasn’t proud of the man, whom the entire nation celebrates, but she didn’t want that to stop her from being herself.

She has always been independent in guiding herself in her profession and is proud of the fact that she hasn’t met with the necessity of using the influence of her celebrity parents, Kamal Haasan and Sarika, to get any opportunities.

Meanwhile, the actress is awaiting the releases of her two bollywood projects, D Day and Ramaiya Vastavaiya. Her last Tamil film, Moonu got her a role in Nikhil Advani’s D Day and Shruti has a very intense role in the film.

The young lady also says that Ramaiya Vastavaiya isn’t a film she would go and watch. But, ‘a number of permutation and combinations’ made her sign up for the project. She is also confident that her character would connect with the masses.

Both her Bollywood films are releasing on 19th July.

"Suriya was inspired by Kamal Haasan" - Event Story

After sounding the victory bugle at the box office over the weekend it was only a matter of time before the celebrations had officially begun. A popular star hotel in Chennai played host to the success meet of Singam 2 last evening, 8th July. The event’s gathering included the likes of Suriya and director Hari along with several cast members such as Vijaykumar, Nasser and Rahman among others. The film’s music director Devi Sri Prasad was also part of the celebrations.

The mood was definitely one of jubilation within the team of Singam 2. Director Hari addressed the fact that Singam 2 had surmounting expectations largely due to the successful first part. This was reason enough for the director to work hard and script a film that could match or better Singam. He also said that over the span of four films that he and Suriya had done together they have grown close to each other like brothers. He was visibly chuffed with the outcome of the film and the responses at the box office and attributed that to his team’s hard work.

Suriya spoke with a lot of delight on his face and said that he had anticipated this success and that it had come to him at the right time and he heaped praises on director Hari for this result. He revealed that his better half, Jyothika, had watched the film and applauded his performance and congratulated him for it. Suriya’s father, Sivakumar, had sent his son a message saying that he was proud of him after watching Singam 2, and these were the moments that Suriya cherished at the end of the day.

Nasser said that during the shoot of Singam 2, he would talk to Suriya about his experiences with Kamal Haasan and those talks had visibly inspired Suriya to up his game. Vijaykumar too had noticed that Suriya had given this role his all and had completely surrendered himself to its demands. The distributors were a happy bunch when they said that Suriya is a highly profitable star as he manages to give at least one big hit every year.

Naturally there were questions raised about Singam 3 but Hari’s honest reply said that he had no story in mind at the moment.

''26th Annual FeTNA 2013 in Toronto''

The 26th annual Federation of Tamil Sangams of North America convention, otherwise known as FeTNA, has now ended – drawing to close an extremely successful & well-orchestrated celebration of Tamil culture in Toronto. Attended by thousands the entire 3-day event was very well planned by a dedicated team, and somehow managed to squeeze in salutes to all of Tamil business, education, literature, history, politics, music, drama, dance and, of course, film and its associated celebrities.

The convention kicked off with a private ‘Dinner with the Stars’ for sponsors, donors & media, during which beloved Kollywood singers Kalaimamani Mano, Isai Payanam’s Charulatha Mani and Super Singer’s Sathya Prakash answered questions for the press & gave the audience a brief taste of the music they would hear later that weekend, accompanied by Toronto’s Bharathi Arts group. When asked why they chose to participate in this year’s FeTNA convention in Canada Mano very humbly explained that he considered it a privilege to participate in such a large scale gathering devoted to Tamil arts, and, at a time when Tamil music has lost so many of its greats, like legends PB Srinivas and TM Soundrarajan, opportunities to honor the Tamil language were essentially opportunities to honor their memories & contributions to the culture. While Sathya Prakash expressed his happiness to return to Toronto yet again to participate in a grand concert, Charulatha Mani hit the nail on the head when explaining that she jumped at the chance to attend because she was proud of the merging of North American Tamils of both Indian & Sri Lankan descent, stating that “for the first time I’m seeing this unity for a language and not a country”.

As the first full day of the convention, Friday July 5 was chalk full of talks & networking sessions encouraging the growth of Tamil businesses in North America & abroad, in concurrence with events regarding Tamil literature, political issues and presentations by American Tamil associations. The day also included some star power in the form of comedy by Robo Shanker and a full Carnatic music concert by Charulatha. The day ended with a formidable dance performance of the ‘Sivakamiyin Sabadam’ choreographed by the world renowned Madurai R Muralidharan, that greatly showcased local talent & surpassed expectations – proving that the cultivation of ancient forms of Thamizh storytelling are being kept alive by today’s NRI youth.

On Saturday attendees received the convention’s primary dose of Tamil arts and cinema, as the day was filled with ongoing Carnatic music, contemporary dance performances, dramas, concurrently running Youth seminars on various topics, and time with Kollywood attendees, including actress Oviya and director P. Samuthirakani, who moderated a debate regarding friendship in the modern age. A press conference was also held for the team behind A Gun & A Ring, the Canadian Tamil & English language film directed by Toronto filmmaker Lenin Sivam that has been steadily gaining steam and attention around the world; the conference ensued great discussion over the film’s categorization as a “cross-over” given its diverse cast & Canadian-set storyline, and also revealed that producer Vishnu Muralee is in talks with Indian distributors regarding its release.

FeTNA 2013’s peak of attendance was of course the concert on Saturday evening featuring Mano, Charulatha, Sathya Prakash, American-raisedSuper Singer runner-up Pragathi and others, accompanied by Toronto’s very talented AGNI music troupe (who deserve a special mention for their musical performance, intricate choreography & entertaining use of visuals). An entirely packed Sony Centre enjoyed a fantastic concert presenting a mix of recent cinema hits & classic Illaiyaraja & AR Rahman gems, appealing to all ages present. Charulatha shed her classical persona to rock her hit “Chillax”, amongst others; Sathya Prakash also brought down the house with his own playbackhits, but his shining moment had to be his performance of the evergreen “Senthamizh Thaen Mozhiyal”. And the kingmaker, Kalaimamani Mano, enthralled the audience with animated performances of the biggest hits of his career including “Nee Oru Kathal Sangeetham”, “Thillana Thillana”, “Aathangarai” and “Mukkala”, proving that his voice & personality are practically ageless.

Overall, kudos must be given to FeTNA 2013’s organizing committee, the Canadian Thamizh Congress and the American FeTNA association as a whole, for devoting immense amounts of time & effort to make the entire convention such a well-orchestrated success. Despite a few late starts & minor scheduling confusion, which are expected with an event of such size, the whole weekend was impressively maintained by devoted volunteers, and should be considered a proud achievement by Toronto’s Tamil community, especially. Some may say that the event was tailored for business leaders & artists versus a more general cross-section of Tamils, but the crowd of thousands present truly appreciated the wide offering of programs & spirit of unity. The purpose of FeTNA to encourage the preservation of Tamil language & culture amongst its own descendants was certainly achieved; but, with the staggering amount of business & cultural knowledge gathered at the convention this weekend, the North American Tamil diaspora also successfully demonstrated generations worth of educational & artistic accomplishments, positive contributions to international economies and their significant role in providing color & depth to the Canadian & US landscape as a whole

Dr. Vijay Mallya's role in Shankar's 'I' !

Director Shankar along with his team of ‘I’ has returned to Chennai after a brief schedule in Bangalore and Mysore which lasted for 4 days. The schedule had the team lodged in Mysore at the famous stud farm of liquor baron and business tycoon Dr.Vijay Mallya.

Combination scenes involving Chiyaan Vikram and Ramkumar, older brother of Prabhu, were canned in this location. There is a high possibility that Chiyaan Vikram would be seen straddling or riding horses heroically in the film.

The next phase of shooting will start in Chennai on the 19th of this month. It has been said that the film’s cinematographer P.C. Sreeram is really enjoying himself with the kind of visuals and locales this film’s script has demanded.

Shruti Haasan wants children, but no marriage

In a stunning interview, actress Shruti Haasan, daughter of Kamal Haasan, has expressed her views about marriage. “I just can’t see myself getting married,” she said in a recent interview. She supposedly isn’t a ‘girlfriend’ type and believes that she would make a difficult girlfriend.

But the D Day actress loves kids and wants to have children. To quote Shruti, “I see kids sooner than marriage, I don’t know why”.

The actress loves her independence and doesn’t wish to ruin it by getting into a relationship. The actress feels it’s very difficult to find a good and kind person. She prefers to be with someone who doesn’t put forth the ‘I-want-you-to-be-this-way condition’.

The actress finally sums up saying that she wouldn’t think twice to give up her relationship, if it gets in the way of her career. However, she says this view of her might change when she gets older, but for now she is pretty clear about what she wants.

Vishwaroopam 2 trailer receives a rousing welcome

While his Vishwaroopam aimed at breaking new grounds in India, Kamal has taken the sequel Vishwaroopam 2 to a global platform. IIFA awards held recently in Macau hosted Viswaroopam 2's trailer release. The slickly cut trailer received a rousing welcome from the Bollywood fraternity. Kamal, who spoke to news agencies at the IIFA awards asserted that he was sure from the beginning of Viswaroopam's shooting that there would be a sequel. Subsequently, he had written the story in two parts.

Though Vishwaroopam 2 is still under progress, it is expected to release in 2013. Kamal also revealed that the second part is "both a sequel and prequel" with heavy focus on human relationships. "Vishwaroopam 2 is technologically more advanced. There are underwater scenes for which we shot recently," Kamal said. Kamal returns as Major Wisam Ahmad while Pooja Kumar, Rahul Bose, Andrea Jeremiah and Jaideep Ahlawat return in the sequel performing important roles. Shamdat Sainudeen replaces Sanu Varghese as the cinematographer while Ghibran handles Vishwaroopam 2's music. The movie will be a crisp 2 hours.

Is it Shankar, after A.R.Murugadoss, for Ilayathalapathy Vijay?

Now this is big. If inside sources are to be believed, the combo that gave us that memorable remake of 3 Idiots in 2012, Nanban, is set to reunite for a big budget extravaganza. Yes, Ilayathalapathy Vijay and Shankar might assemble for a new project in 2014 after the two are done with their other commitments. It is heard that Vijay has agreed to allot bulk dates for this Shankar film after his other flicks are done.

Vijay is waiting for the release of Thalaivaa and is currently shooting for Jilla. He is also committed to a big A.R.Murugadoss project next year, after the path-breaking performance of Thuppakki last year.

Shankar is currently working day and night for I, featuring Vikram and Amy Jackson. This film is expected to take some more months to complete, by which time, Vijay is also expected to be free from his other commitments.

When Behindwoods correspondent contacted Vijay's manager, he was non-committal and replied that he would be in a position to answer affirmatively only when the Vijay - Murugadoss project has commenced.

Much can happen between now and then, and as of now, the Vijay - Shankar reunion, though mighty exciting, is still in its nascent stages. We will keep you posted on all the moves in this regard.

In 1999 Vijay acted in the successful Thulladha Manamum Thullum again with Simran. This was followed by Endrendrum Kadhal, Nenjinile and the K.S.Ravikumar directed Minsara Kanna.
From the start of the new millennium Vijay began to commit to entertaining and commercial ventures, which marked a change in his trend. In 2000 he did Kannukkul Nilavu with Fazil. His next venture Kushi, a romantic comedy co-starring Jyothika was directed by S. J. Suryah and became a box office hit. At the end of the year, he acted in a romantic drama, Priyamanavale, which was also a box office hit. His 2001 romantic comedy film Friends was directed by Siddique and featured him in the leading role alongside Suriya again, this film topped the years box office and became a blockbuster. Followed by Badri an action–drama film which was the remake of the Telugu film Thammudu a super hit and Shahjahan, a romantic drama film which was moderately successful at the box office. In 2002, he starred in Thamizhan alongside Priyanka Chopra who made her acting debut in that film before her establishment as the leading Bollywood actress. The film was a box office hit, giving Vijay his only hit film of the that time.[6][7] Later, he featured in the romantic drama Youth and action drama Bagavathi there by rounded off the year with 1 hit and 2 average successes. Vijay began 2003 with the films Vaseegara and Pudhiya Geethai, both failures at the box office.

2003–07

In late 2003, Vijay transformed from a romantic hero to an action hero, with the action-romance flick, Thirumalai opposite to Jyothika directed by debutant Ramana and produced by K.Balachander's Kavithalaya Productions, which featured him in a new look and was a box office hit. Thirumalai was a turning point in Vijay's career.[8] His new commercial mass acting style and punch dialogue delivery coupled with his comic timing endeared him to all types of audiences and he soon achieved leading status in Kollywood. Udhaya, a film which began filming in 2002 but became delayed, finally released at the start of 2004. Ghilli,a remake of the Telugu film Okkadu released next in 2004, and became Vijay's biggest blockbuster at the time completing 200 days in theatres in Tamil Nadu. Directed by S. Dharani and produced by A. M. Rathnam, it co-starred Trisha and Prakash Raj, and was the biggest hit for Vijay at that period.Ghilli is the highest grossing film in Tamil at that time of release.[9]
It was followed by Madhurey, another hit which was directed by R.Madesh. In 2005, he starred in the Perarasu-directed action film Thirupaachi which became a blockbuster hit, followed by a guest appearance in Sukran, the romantic comedy Sachien co-starring Genelia which became a decent hit, and the successful commercial film Sivakasi co-starring Asin, which was directed again by Perarasu. His next film Aadhi was produced by his father S.A.Chandrashekar and directed by Ramana again released in 2006, and was not well received and flopped at box office despite its huge expectations. In early 2007, Vijay starred in the gangster film Pokkiri, the remake of the another Telugu film of the same name. Directed by Prabhu Deva, it became a box office blockbuster and the second highest grossing Tamil film of 2007. Vijay's character in the film, a reprisal of Mahesh Babu's role in the original, was well praised by critics.

2007–10

In late 2007, Vijay starred in the extrasensory perception thriller film Azhagiya Thamizh Magan, and for the first time in his career, he appeared in dual roles as both the antagonist and protagonist. The film was an average success, despite the initial hype and expectations. In 2008, he starred in the action film Kuruvi, again under Dharani's direction, which was a failure at box office produced by Red Gaint Movies. The year 2009 started off with the action masala film Villu, in which Vijay teamed up with Prabhu Deva after the successful Pokkiri. The film earned mixed reviews and became unsuccessful. But, the actor's next film Vettaikaaran which was directed by Babu Sivan, produced by AVM Productions and distributed by Sun Pictures was an above average success. In 2010, he acted in his 50th film, Sura, also distributed by Sun Pictures. Sura released amidst huge fanfare and expectations, but was a box office disaster. Vijay was forced to give a compensation of INRcrore (US$1.0 million) to the theatre owners who had suffered losses due to the screening of his recent films.[10] Most of his films during this period did not do well at the box office and Vijay's status as a leading star was questioned by critics. In late 2010 Vijay even fell out with the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, which was virtually controlling the film industry at the time, following which he aligned with the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam and featured in its success in the 2011 assembly election.

Resurgence(2011–present)

In the start of 2011 he associated with director Siddique again, for the romantic drama Kaavalan, the Tamil remake of the Malayalam film Bodyguard also co-starring Asin. It received a positive response from both viewers and critics and was deemed to be a box office hit, in spite of the ruling DMK stalling its release in many theatres which forced Vijay to shell out his salary and spend an extra INRcrore (US$690,000) for the release of the film.[11][12] During Diwali the same year, his next film, the action film Velayudham directed by M. Raja and produced by Venu Ravichandran released and was a box office blockbuster and completed 100 days run.[13] Velayudham became one of the top grossing films of 2011.
His next release was Nanban, the Tamil remake of the Bollywood blockbuster 3 Idiots, where he essayed the role played by Aamir Khan in the original. Directed by acclaimed director S. Shankar, it released during the Pongal weekend of 2012 and emerged a major financial success. Vijay's performance in the film was praised by critics, including leading Indian actor Kamal Haasan.[14] Nanban went on to complete its 100th day theatrical run.[15][16] Nanban was the biggest hit for Vijay at the time of release.[17] He made a special appearance in the 2012 Bollywood film Rowdy Rathore starring Akshay Kumar, directed by Prabhu Deva.[18]
His next film, the action thriller Thuppakki, directed by A. R. Murugadoss and produced by S. Dhanu, released on Diwali 2012 to mostly positive reviews and was a commercial success across the globe.[19] Thuppaki was declared as a blockbuster.[20] The film also became the fourth film to enter the INR100 crore (US$17 million) club in Tamil cinema and is the biggest hit in Vijay's career.[21] Eros International announced that Thuppakki made a domestic nett collection of INR185 crore (US$32 million).[22]
His next flim Thalaivaa co-starring Amala Paul and directed by A. L. Vijay is complete. He will soon be joining the sets of Jilla co-starring Kajal Aggarwal alongside Mohanlal, directed by debutante Nesan who was an assistant director in Velayudham.[23]

In 2009, Vijay was speculated joining the Indian National Congress after he met with Rahul Gandhi.[31] In 2010, he fell out with then ruling DMK party owing to the delay of the release of his film Kaavalan in order to release the dhanush starrer aadukalam distributed by sun pictures, then Vijay supported AIADMK in next assembly elections and also passed the message to his fans.
In early 2011, Vijay openly expressed his desire to enter politics and his father S.A. Chandrasekhar confirmed it, saying that Vijay will officially enter politics at the age of 40.[32] Following which he declared his support for the AIADMK led alliance in the 2011 state assembly election, and the AIADMK welcomed him by providing 3 seats to his fan club, Vijay Makkal Iyakkam[33] He campaigned extensively for the AIADMK during the election campaign. He made a speech in Nagapattinam, condemning the attack on the fishermen by the Sri Lankan Government, thus marking his political visionnage.[34]
On 25 August 2011, Vijay went to the Ramlila Maidan to meet Anna Hazare and expressed support to the anti-corruption movement for the Lokpal. He lauded that the movement is getting public support without any political background and said that "the Gandhian's stir has triggered a nationwide debate on uprooting corruption".[35]
The 2013 film Thalaivaa was speculated to be a political film, Vijay denied during an interview.[36] In response to a question several months later about the possibility of his entry into politics, he said he has no time to think of politics now.[37]

Philanthropy

Vijay converted his fan clubs into a people's movement called Vijay Makkal Iyakkam which was officially launched at Pudukottai on 26 July 2009.[38] His Makkal Iyakkam is responsible for most of the philanthropic activities conducted by the star. After Cyclone Thane his Makkal Mandram administrators arranged for a function at Kammiyampettai, Cuddalore where the star distributed five kilos of rice to the affected people. Cuddalore was the worst affected area in floods and Vijay reached out to help these people out by rendering some assistance. The area in which the function happened soon wore a festive look with thousands of people gathering to catch a glimpse of their favorite star.[39] Vijay has appeared along with Suriya, R. Madhavan and Jyothika in a short commercial video about child poverty, labour and lack of education, titled Herova? Zerova? produced by Surya in an effort to eliminate children who drop out of school at an early age, made in association with Vishnuvardhan Induri the founder of CCL and the Ministry of Education of Tamil Nadu[40]. The Ilayathalapathy Vijay Educational Awards 2012 was conducted at JS Kalyana Mandapam in Chennai on 8 July 2012 by his Vijay Makkal Iyakkam to honour the students topped in 2012 SSLC and 12th board exams and the awards were distributed by Vijay himself.
